TO the eastward of the noble mansion described in the preceding article, the grounds present a lavish profusion of shrubbery, nursery, garden, bower, and all other forms of rural embellishment. In the midst of this mass of gay vegetation stands the old embattled Gateway of the ancient Palace, the subject of the present illustration, under which doubtless many a crowned head and mailed warrior have passed in former times. In front of this barris, or barrier-gate, stood till lately the ancient cross of Scone, a narrow upright stone, thirteen feet in height, ornamented at the top, and rising from an octagonal pedestal, placed on a quadrangular flight of steps, as represented in the subjoined cut.
