ARDMEANACH or THE BLACK ISLE, a peninsular district of Cromartyshire, bounded on the north-west and north by the Cromarty frith; on the east by the Moray frith; on the south by Loch Beauly; and on the west by the vale of the Conan. It comprises 8 parishes and receives its English name from its bleak, moorland character. It is now, however, well-intersected by roads.
