I was originally only able to obtain volume 2 of this set, though, recently, an extremely generous Patron. sent me volume 1. So, that’s our next priority for upload. It’s one I’ve been excited to get into and it’s wonderful to have the chance already.
This is William Guthrie’s ‘General History of Scotland’ (1767), volumes 1 and 2, and I’m curious as to the information it might contain. I was surprised with a wee bonus in the form of a disbound 48x43cm, highly detailed, Map of Scotland inside the front cover of volume 2. It was pretty wrinkled and its top corner had torn off and remained attached to the binding. I carefully took this out and reattached it to the main body of the map before ironing it (worked a treat) and scanning it for the Maps from Books section. Volume 1 has representations, by varying artists, of the Initial Kings of the Picts, Alba, and of Scots, with those after the Great Cause, until Edward Baliol, found in volume 2, I’ve uploaded below. They’re not always in the correct order of reign despite this being the order they appear within the publication. Dates of reign taken from Buchanan’s ‘History of Scotland’ (1827).
