“Watty and Meg,” pp.100-101.

[Anecdotes of Burns Contents]

BURNS admired Wilson’s “Watty and Meg” greatly. On one occasion, Andrew Bishop, a well known ballad-crier, was going along crying, “ ‘Watty and Meg,’ &c., by Burns.” The bard was writing at his desk, and exclaimed – 

“O, Andrew, that’s a d——d lie; but I would have been very proud to have acknowledged it.”
