This is a map of Torrance, over by East Kilbride, to the South East of Glasgow, from David Ure’s ‘History of Rutherglen and East-Kilbride‘ (1793). On it is mentioned that it is the “Seat of Alex. Stuart Esq.,” great grandson of James Stuart, who first acquired the property and land, and, therefore, great great grandson of Sir Archibald Stuart of Castlemilk.
Up the right-hand-side you can see the road is described as, “Great Road from Loudon to Glasgow & Paisley, by Carlisle, Dumfries, Muirkirk, &c.” Not the most succinct road name. Over by where the Crutherland Cave can be found we have on the map “Polliskin Glen” which doesn’t exist any more in the names of anything in the surrounding area, with Calder having replaced Polliskin. A very nice wee map of an area that doesn’t look too dissimilar today.
