   MARY STEWART, QUEEN OF SCOTS (1542-1587).

   FRANCIS II., KING OF FRANCE, son of Henry II. and Catherine de Medici, husband of Mary Stewart. He died 1560. This miniature is so entered in the Catalogue of Portrait Miniatures on loan at South Kensington Museum in 1865; but it really is a portrait of Lord Darnley, adapted, with slight changes, from the engraving usually assigned to Elstracke, which frequently appears in copies of Holland’s Baziliωlogia, 1618, and was regarded by Mr, Albert Way as ‘the most authentic portrait of Darnley, probably, that exists.’ [J.
