The Solemn League and Covenant, p.90.

[Anecdotes of Burns Contents]

ON hearing a gentleman sneering at the Solemn League and Covenant, and calling it ridiculous and fanatical, the poet eyed him across the table, and exclaimed:-

“The Solemn League and Covenant

Cost Scotland blood – cost Scotland tears –

But it sealed Freedom’s sacred cause:

If thou’rt a slave, indulge thy sneers.”
